It’s nice to have more research to back us up!  Among the finding highlighted in an article from the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University are:

  • Set rules and expect your child to follow them
  • Set a good example
  • Maintain rituals and
  • Incorporate religious/spiritual practice into your family life.

OK… maybe I’m biased… but does this sound anything like….

  • Work hard
  • Refuse to fail
  • Develop discipline and
  • Give to others

Addiction (to alcohol and other drugs) is a brain disorder and while good parenting can swing the odds in your child’s favor there are no more guarantees than there are in the prevention of heart disease and diabetes.

Controlling risk factors improves your odds.  Period.

Here’s a link to the rest of the article from the conference.
